Must see: Humpback breaches in front of Olympic Mountains

Captain Jeff Friedman’s view from his “office” is arguably better than most. In his view Monday, a humpback calf breached in front of the Olympic Mountains.

He posted the breathtaking photo to Twitter.

“This calf is the latest calf (6th) of area favorite Humpback Big Mama. She returned to the area a few weeks ago for the summer with this energetic calf in tow! They've been amazing to see out on the water!”

Earlier in the spring he shared a photo of “Humpback Big Mama.”

Friedman is part of Maya's Legacy Whale Watching, which advocates for responsible watching and wildlife viewing.

Jill Berger from The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor says Big Mama and her whale family are probably from water off Hawaii. Experts believe Calf Number 6 is about four months old. Calves typically don't get named until after their first birthday.

Berger says researchers believe Big Mama has been returning to the area every year since 2003. It's believed she's expanding her feeding ground into the Strait of Georgia.
