83-year-old woman killed in Lynnwood wrong-way crash involving kidnapping suspect

LYNNWOOD, Wash. — A fatal crash that killed an 83-year-old woman and involved a kidnapping suspect shut down both directions of State Route 525 in Lynnwood Thursday night.

The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office told KIRO 7 that deputies were pursuing a suspect’s car but had ended the chase before the crash near 148th Street Southwest in Lynnwood happened at around 8 p.m.

They were chasing a suspect in a car in connection to a kidnapping of a woman, and a domestic violence assault.

The kidnapping victim was inside the suspect’s car.

When the suspect drove southbound in the northbound lanes of SR 525, deputies ended the chase because it was too dangerous to pursue a car going the wrong way.

As the suspect drove the wrong way on the highway, he hit an 83-year-old woman’s car head-on, killing her.

The suspect’s car rolled over, caught fire and came to rest on top of the barrier between the northbound and southbound lanes.

The suspect, a 37-year-old Kenmore man, was taken to Harborview Medical Center. He may be charged with vehicular assault - domestic violence, DUI and second-degree murder.

His passenger, who is believed to have been kidnapped, was taken to Providence Medical Center for her injuries.
